I, like a few others here in the devilberry comunity, love the shit out of martial arts. Taijutsu, Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, BJJ, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, LOVE EM.
So, what i ask of you people is if you love them too, practicing, drawing, or even just watching cheesy kung fu movies.
So, grab a seat, warm up your favorate keyboard fingers, and let's talk punching ; )

I love using what I learn from martial arts in fiction!
My favorite sort of thing usually involves when a character has some sort of super-power, but rather then using it wastefully, adopts martial arts strategy with it.
Thats one thing I have to say impresses me about Naruto. They take a power set, like shadow binding, and they give it to someone strategically minded just to show us what you can accomplish with a seemingly simple power.
Superman, powerful.
Batman, martial artist.
I know which one I like better.

I miss martial arts. Due to an insanely busy study schedule I havn't been able to do any for over 2 years now. I really wanna give Krav Maga and Muay Thai a go as well, just to see what they're like.
There's an indefinable zen about martial arts that it's difficult to achieve with other things. I suppose it comes from the fact that you're trying to train your body not to think about what it's doing, so that it all comes naturally. Sure, the same could be said about sports, but there's also a shift in mindset and confidence that i find comes only with martial arts.
I definately love using what I learn from it for drawing and writing. It's difficult to describe how a well trained fighter moves and reacts unless you've experienced it yourself. Even describing how a bad fighter reacts to a trained fighter is difficult unless you know about fighting.
Same with drawing a character; unless you've been taught how to move and strike it's difficult to draw a convincing image of a duel or battle.
Actually I've noticed a degredation in my skills depicting fights specifically because it's been so long since I've practiced a martial art :S gonna have to fix that if I ever get some free time :P

You already do a lot that gives you insight where one would not normally have it.
Try to clear up an evening a week, and see if you can fit a 2 hour martial arts class into it.
That, or if you're looking to write about it, check out some wacky martial arts flicks, or old eastern fables.
I'm always available to offer my own insights if need be

YES! martial arts, the only sport (besides archery) i ever stuck with by my own free will. Now that i actually have a work schedule, not just a "sit at this desk until you pass out" im thinking of getting back into them.. and drawing.
Theres nothing more satisfing than a well draw fight scene

There are two forms of martial arts. The sporting side, and the art side.
Sporting being defined by focus on points (ie, Ippon in Judo) and Art being something closer to traditional self defence.
Personally, I think both have their place, I love watching different kinds of exotic martial arts, and also seeing high end competitors in tense matches.
I'm particularly interested in how martial arts is effecting some up coming scenes in Academicon…

i've alway found watching people of middling ability more interesting to watch spar. when you get two really highly trained opponents they tend to be more reserved and you get a lot more moving around with less actual conflict. which is really good, but i find it more interesting when the opponents know what they're doing but still have the tendancy to go on the offence more
